Ellen G. White plagiarizes Joseph Smith

"Largely paralleling the early Advent movement in time was the Mormon development, headed by their 'prophet' Joseph Smith (1804-1844), who asserted that he received direct communication from God. Smith claimed to have received numerous 'visions' between 1820 and 1844." Prophetic Guidance in Early Days, by Arthur White, Former Secretary of the E. G. W. Estate.

A comparison between Joseph Smith, 1805-1844, and Ellen White, 1827-1915

JS: "I was born in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five, on the twenty‑third day of December, in the town of Sharon, Windsor county, State of Vermont..." JS 2:3

EGW: "I was born at Gorham, Maine, November 26, 1827." 1T 9

Early family religious orientation

EGW: was fifteen years of age when her family was "discontinued from the church... we had been guilty of walking contrary to the rules of the Methodist church." 1T 45

JS: "In process of time my mind became somewhat partial to the Methodist sect, and I felt some desire to be united with them..." JS 2:8

EGW: "My parents, Robert and Eunice Harmon... became earnest and devoted members of the Methodist Episcopal church." 1T 9

Distress of mind

JS: "During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious reflection and great uneasiness..." JS 2:8

EGW: "My mind was often in great distress, because I did not experience the spiritual ecstasy that I considered would be the evidence of my acceptance with God..." 1T 17

Vision in the woods

JS: "...I retired to the woods...After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desire of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me... I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell on me." JS 2:14‑17

EGW: "Then I would go away alone in the woods, where no eye or ear but God's could see or hear, and pray to Him, and He would sometimes give me a vision there...EW 21 (1945).

Contempt for visions

JS: "Some few days after I had this vision, I happened to be in company with one of the Methodist preachers... I took occasion to give him an account of the vision which I had had. I was greatly surprised at his behaviour; he treated my communication not only lightly, but with great contempt, saying it was all of the devil..." JS 2:21‑22

EGW: "Soon it was reported all around that the visions were the result of mesmerism, and many Adventists were ready to believe and circulate the report..." EW 21 (1945).

Bitter opposition

JS: "...all united to persecute me ... a spirit of the most bitter persecution..." JS 2:23

EGW: "Paul was a man who knew what it means to be a partaker of Christ's sufferings ... I speak with no hesitation about this matter, for I know for myself that what he says is true." 8T 125‑126

Condemnation and agony in the night

JS: "I often felt condemned for my weaknesses and imperfections...after I retired to bed for the night, I betook myself to prayer and supplication to the Almighty for forgiveness of all my sins, and follies, and also for a manifestation to me that I might know of my state and standing before him." JS 2:29

EGW: "Words of condemnation rang in my ears day and night, and my constant cry to God was, What shall I do to be saved? ... My sufferings of mind were intense. Sometimes for a whole night I would dare not to close my eyes...then quietly leave my bed and kneel upon the floor, praying silently, with a dumb agony that cannot be described." IT 23,26

Chosen from obscurity

JS: "...and though I was an obscure boy, only between fourteen and fifteen years of age... a boy of no consequence in the world, yet men of high standing would take notice sufficient to excite the public mind against me..." JS 2:22

EGW: "An unspeakable awe filled me, that I, so young and feeble should be chosen as the instrument by which God would give light to his people." IT 62

EGW: "But it seemed impossible for one so young, and in feeble health, to do so much in the great work." IT 38

JS: "At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God..." JS 2:13

EGW: "...I appropriated to myself the precious promise of Jesus. He had said to his disciples, 'Ask, and ye shall receive..." IT 55

A beautiful person enters

JS: "...when immediately a personage appeared at my bedside..." JS 2:30

JS: ...his whole person was glorious beyond description... When I first looked upon him, I was afraid; but the fear soon left me. He called me by name, and said..." JS 2:32‑33

EGW: "...Just then the door opened, and a person of beautiful form and countenance entered..." 1T 28

EGW: "I tried to shield myself from his gaze, feeling unable to endure his searching eyes, but he drew near me with a smile, and, laying his hand upon my head, said, 'Fear not.'" 1T 28‑29

The messenger appears again

JS: "I lay musing on the singularity of the scene... I suddenly discovered the room was again beginning to get lighted, and in an instant, as it were, the same heavenly messenger was again by my bedside." JS 2:44

EGW: "Death brings dissolution to the body, but makes no change in our characters. The coming of Christ does not change our characters it only fixes them forever beyond all change..." 5T 466 (1882)

Bowing down to plead forgiveness

JS: "...they did bow down before me and did plead with me that I would forgive them of the things that they had done against me... I did frankly forgive them..." 1 Nephi 7:20

EGW: "...and upon your knees asked me to forgive you for the things you said about me ...I freely forgave you..." 5T 622, 623 (1882)

Another example of copying by Mrs. White

E.G. White: The judges sat in the open air, upon seats hewn out in the rock, on a platform which was ascended by a flight of stone steps from the valley below. Sketches From the Life of Paul p.93 1883.

Conybeare and Howson: The judges sat in the open air, upon seats hewn out in the rock, on a platform which was ascended by a flight of steps immediately from the Agora. Life and Epistles of The Apostle Paul p.308 (first edition printed in 1851).

E.G. White: Had his oration been a direct attack upon, their gods, and the great men of the city who were before him, he would have been in danger of meeting the fate of Socrates p.97 Sketches From the Life of Paul, 1883.

Conybeare and Howson: Had he begun by attacking the national gods in the midst of their sanctuaries, and with the Areopagites on the seats near him he would have been in almost as great danger as Socrates before him p.310 Life and Epistles of the Apostle Paul p. 310 (first edition 1851).

E.G. White: An extensive and profitable business had grown up at Ephesus from the manufacture and sale of these shrines and images p. 142 Sketches From the Life of Paul 1883.

Conybeare and Howson: From the expressions used by Luke, it is evident that an extensive and lucrative trade grew up at Ephesus from the manufacture and sale of these shrines p.432 Life and Epistles of the Apostle Paul, (first edition 1851).

In the PREFACE of Mrs. E.G. White's book we read this interesting statement: "The writer of this book, having received especial help from the Spirit of God, is able to throw light upon the teachings of Paul and their application to our own time, as no other authors are prepared to do."

Question: Did the "Spirit of God" lead Mrs. White to "take" the above and much more from a book written 32 years before, with no credit given, and no quotation marks used to show its real origin? Your Answer, your response must be a glory to God and well pleasing to Jesus Christ.
